{"id":1000,"date":"2025-10-14T11:33:15","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T11:33:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/missions.grz.gov.zm\/geneva\/?p=1000"},"modified":"2025-10-14T11:33:15","modified_gmt":"2025-10-14T11:33:15","slug":"the-60th-session-of-the-human-rights-council-closes-in-geneva","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/missions.grz.gov.zm\/geneva\/?p=1000","title":{"rendered":"The 60th Session of the Human Rights Council Closes in Geneva"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The 60<sup>th<\/sup> Regular Session of the Human Rights Council was held from 8<sup>th<\/sup> September \u2013 8<sup>th<\/sup> October 2025, in Geneva, Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>The Human Rights Council is the main intergovernmental body within the United Nations responsible for human rights. Established in 2006 by the General Assembly, it is responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe.<\/p>\n<p>The Council, composed of 47 Member States, provides a multilateral forum to address human rights violations and country situations. It responds to human rights emergencies and makes recommendations on how to better implement human rights on the ground. Zambia is currently an observer state in the Council.<\/p>\n<p>The High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Volker Turk opened the 60<sup>th<\/sup> Session by presenting his global update on the situation of human rights around the world. During his update, he highlighted Zambia\u2019s continued cooperation with Special Rapporteurs by accepting two country visits in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>During the Session, nine (9) general debates, forty-one (41) interactive dialogues, one (1) urgent debate and five (5) panel discussions were held. The Session concluded with the adoption of thirty-five (35) resolutions.<\/p>\n<p>Zambia actively participated in the Session by delivering intervention statements on many of the pertinent issues, including the General Debate on the Oral Update of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Enhanced Interactive Dialogue on the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Zambia also delivered statements in support of Kenya and Lesotho during the adoption of their Universal Periodic Review Report. At a regional level, Zambia drafted the African Group Statement on the Biennial Panel on Youth and Human Rights.<\/p>\n<p>The Permanent Mission of Zambia co-hosted a side event entitled \u2018Moving away from the Death Penalty for Children: Arguments, Trends and Perspectives to Advance Global Abolition. The event discussed the impact of the death penalty on the enjoyment of the human rights of the child.
