12\/03\/2026 \u2013 The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Zambia participated in the Official welcome ceremony for the French Irish Mission Programme and the Netherland Talent Programme. Under these two programmes, Governments from developing countries at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) receive support for Capital based officials through a ten (10) months capacity building programme. During this period, the officials are based either at the Mission in Geneva or in one of the Divisions at the WTO Secretariat.<\/p>\n
For the 2026 edition, Ms. Sasha Chimungu, Acting Senior Economist at the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry has been attached to the Permanent Mission of Zambia for the period March to December, 2026. During this period, the officer will contribute to the Missions work at the WTO including the preparations for the 14th<\/sup> WTO Ministerial Conference scheduled to take place from 26th<\/sup> to 29th<\/sup> March, 2026 in Yaound\u00e9, Cameroon. Ms. Chimungu is one of forty (40) officials from developing countries to benefit from the programme. This is in line with the Governments goal to encourage internships for youths.<\/p>\n During the welcome ceremony, Mr. Xiangchen Zhang, Deputy Director General, WTO extended a warm welcome to all the participants. He expressed his appreciation to the Governments of France, Ireland and the Netherlands for their continued partnership with the WTO in the realm of technical assistance and capacity building. He wished all the participants a successful stay in Geneva.<\/p>\n Speaking during the welcome ceremony, Amb. Eunice M.T. Luambia, Ambassador of Zambia to the United Nations Office and to the Confederation of Switzerland expressed gratitude to the Governments of France, Ireland and the Netherlands for their continued technical and financial support for developing countries at the WTO. She expressed gratitude and optimism that the support would continue despite the current trend of declining development assistance. Ambassador Luambia wished all the participants a successful stay in Geneva and encouraged them to make the most of the opportunity accorded to them.
