The Zambian delegation to the TPR was led (virtually) by Hon. Chipoka Mulenga, M.P., Minister of Commerce, Trade and Industry who delivered the country’s official opening statement online.

The TPR is a mechanism established under the WTO to promote transparency and understanding of WTO members’ trade policies and practices in line with the WTO Legal text.

Each member of the WTO undergoes a periodic review of their trade policies by the WTO Trade Policy Review Body. As a Least developed country, Zambia undergoes this review every seven (7) years with the last one having taken place in 2016.

Two reports form the basis of the review, one prepared by the member country and an independent analytical report prepared by the WTO Secretariat. Both reports facilitate a transparent and constructive dialogue on the reviewed country’s policies fostering peer review and increased compliance with WTO obligations.

During the review, Hon. Mulenga provided an overview of Zambia’s trade policies and practices implemented since 2017 covering macro-economic developments, enactment of various policies and legislation, the trade and investment regime as well as on Zambia’s participation in bilateral, regional and multilateral trade. These reforms contributed to Zambia’s current positive economic trajectory.

Key recommendations from members included the need for Zambia to improve compliance with WTO notification obligations and invitations to join plurilateral trade agreements which include participation in the e-Commerce Joint Statement Initiative and Services Domestic Regulation.

Zambia’s TPR provided an opportunity for members to comment on the trade policy environment over the last seven years and make recommendations on the way forward to enhance further integration of the country into the global trading system. The TPR also provided Zambia with an opportunity to identify areas requiring attention in the trade eco-system.

By successfully undertaking the review, Zambia reiterated her commitment to the promotion and preservation of the multilateral trading system, with the WTO at its core. Zambia further committed to continue implementing reforms to facilitate deeper integration into the global trading system.

Issued by:

The Permanent Mission of Zambia in Geneva

29/09/2025 – Zambia underwent her 5th Trade Policy Review (TPR) at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on 23rd and 25th September, 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland.
