09/12/2025 – The Permanent Mission of the Republic of Zambia to the United Nations Office in Geneva is proud to announce that Zambia assumed the Presidency of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (APMBC) on 5th December 2025, following the successful conclusion of the 22nd Meeting of States Parties. This milestone marks a historic moment for Zambia and for Africa, as Ambassador Luambia becomes the first female African to lead the Convention since its inception.
Zambia’s presidency comes at a time when the global community is intensifying efforts to achieve a mine-free world. With tremendous support expressed by States Parties, civil society, and international partners, Zambia stands ready to take on this responsibility with determination, inclusivity, and vision.
Speaking at the closing session, Zambia reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the Convention’s core pillars: mine clearance, victim assistance, stockpile destruction, and universalization. The country pledged to work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure that humanitarian principles remain at the heart of mine action.
“Zambia is ready for the challenge. We will lead with transparency, compassion, and resolve, ensuring that the voices of affected communities are heard and that progress towards a mine-free world is accelerated,” said Ambassador Luambia.
The overwhelming support received during the Meeting reflects confidence in Zambia’s leadership and its longstanding humanitarian tradition. As President, Zambia will prioritize strengthening partnerships, mobilizing resources, and amplifying the Convention’s visibility on the global stage.
This presidency is not only a national achievement but also a continental milestone, showcasing Africa’s growing leadership in humanitarian disarmament. Zambia looks forward to working hand in hand with all States Parties and partners to uphold the vision of a safer, mine-free future.
